We had an energy survey done on our house last week, thanks to an incredible Living Social deal. Mostly because it is blatantly obvious during the wintertime that we have drafts downstairs. Like, so obvious that when I go to make my morning smoothie, I get goosebumps from the 30'F breeze coming through the stove hood. While there were several things that were suggested (thankfully the majority are relatively easy and inexpensive), one of the most interesting suggestions was in regards to our basement beer refrigerator.
The purpose for our extra fridge/freezer in the basement is mainly for Brooks' stash of a Sam Adams Seasonal beer (either Fall's Octoberfest or Spring's Noble Pils - enough to get him through the seasons between to the next seasonal ale that he prefers), for monstrous BJ's products, and frozen meats. At this point in time, the beer stash is largely depleted (Octoberfest is in stores now!), thus the fridge is mostly empty and apparently a huge energy drain. Every time we open it, all of the cool air exits and the fridge has to replace it by working overtime. Simple fix: fill the empty space in a fridge with jugs of water and the fridge won't have to work as hard. It makes sense...it's all about air displacement. Jugs of water = less air to displace.
My key take-away? Never let the beer stash get low. Perfect timing for one hell of a Hurricane Irene party this weekend! Honey, can you please pick me up some Sam Adams Cherry Wheat, while you're at it? :)
